This is why you can progress faster. Sometimes before or after a storm, it might not be safe to go surfing, but you can always go longboarding instead and let yourself connect with the board that way instead. Surfing requires good coordination and balance.

Training your core strength is one way to improve your balance. Longboarding can help you improve your core strength. In addition to core strength, longboarding can also help build muscle strength overall and help you stay in shape. The muscles that you use while longboarding are the same ones that you use when surfing except for paddling of course. While all the muscles in your body get a workout, longboarding particularly works the muscles in your legs.

Between balancing on the board, pushing, and braking, your leg muscles will get a complete workout. Not to mention, longboarding gives you a great cardio workout. Longboarding helps strengthen your heart, increase your lung capacity, and builds your stamina. Building your stamina and muscle strength improves your overall physical health, which can be beneficial next time you hit the waves on your surfboard.

You may already be familiar with the term muscle memory. Muscle memory is when a certain movement can be done with little to no conscious effort because your muscles have done that movement so often. Having a strong muscle memory of certain techniques can make it easier to surf.

And because many of the maneuvers you do while surfing are similar to the ones you do while longboarding, you can start strengthening muscle memories when longboarding.

Practicing certain maneuvers on land, allows you to strengthen those maneuvers before you hit the water.

Novice surfers will find this particularly useful so they can get the feel of the board and try out the carves, turns and smooth transitions on flat ground. Another thing that longboarding helps you practice is balance and coordination. Riding the pavement helps you get familiar with the board and teaches you how to distribute the weight for each maneuver. For example, longboarding helps you learn how to keep your feet apart and how to lean on your back foot when doing a turn - all the important lessons for when you actually step on the surfboard.

Not everything in surfing is about the crazy stunts and maneuvers. You first need to learn how to walk before you can learn how to run, right? That's why you might want to ditch your regular skateboard for a longboard. Longboards are excellent for practicing cruising and flowing as they replicate mid-length and longboard-style surfing quite well.

And, the inevitable noseriding that comes with the longboard. Balancing on a longboard or a skateboard activates the same groups of muscles as surfing does. Not only will you increase the strength of your muscles and get in shape for the surf, you will actually teach your muscles how to behave in certain maneuvers. This is called muscle memory. On dry land, you will be able to do the same maneuver until you get it right. And, once you're surfing, it will be much easier to repeat those movements because the practice will translate onto the board.

When you're surfing, you will actually spend the least time standing on the board.
