On weekdays, more than a hundred students entered the temple for scholastic study. On Sunday evenings, a choir school was held to practice worship service accompaniment. In these rooms on the third floor of the temple, as many as Saints came together during weekdays to study a variety of subjects, including reading, writing, history, and geography. The second floor was also used primarily as a space for instruction. The beautiful tiered pulpits on the east and west sides of the first and second floors of the temple impressed upon the minds of the Saints the orders and offices of the priesthood.
In the years leading up to the dedication of the Kirtland Temple, the offices and quorums of the priesthood were organized. The Saints learned that these offices and quorums were central to establishing Zion and her stakes. Order in the temple was also manifest in the way the Saints carried themselves. At the top of these stairs, in the rooms on the third floor of the temple, many Saints participated in ordinances preparatory to taking the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to all the earth.

The temple included a lower hall for worship and an upper hall for education.
Both featured pulpits on either end with initials representing priesthood offices. During construction, the Kirtland Temple was guarded at night to protect the building from threatening mobs and vandals. The Saints crushed glass and chinaware into the stucco applied to the exterior walls of the Kirtland Temple, which glittered in the sun. At the dedication of the Kirtland Temple, the Saints experienced an outpouring of heavenly manifestations including visions, prophecies, the gift of tongues, and the appearance of angels.
Smith arose and began to prophesy, when a noise was heard like the sound of a rushing mighty wind, which filled the Temple, and all the congregation simultaneously rose, being moved upon by an invisible power; many began to speak in tongues and prophesy; others saw glorious visions; and I beheld the Temple was filled with angels, which fact I declared to the congregation.
The Church was too few in numbers. Joseph [labored] in the stone quarry, quarrying rock with his own hands, and the few then in the Church, follow[ed] his example of obedience, and diligence, wherever most needed; with laborers on the walls, holding the sword in one hand to protect themselves from the mob, while they placed the stone and moved the trowel with the other. Deseret News, Apr. God was there [in the Kirtland Temple], his angels were there, the Holy Ghost was in the midst of the people.

Snow, General Relief Society President, — The ceremonies of that [Kirtland Temple] dedication may be rehearsed, but no mortal language can describe the heavenly manifestations of that memorable day. Tullidge, The Women of Mormondom, , This dedicatory prayer for the Kirtland Temple was given to the Prophet Joseph by revelation. One week after the Kirtland Temple was dedicated, the Prophet Joseph and Oliver Cowdery, separated from the congregation by a veil, offered silent prayer at the pulpit. When they finished, this glorious vision was given to them.
